Control of external 3-phase thyristors for DC motors and slip ring motors

Drive Controller (External Stacks): Technical Summary

The PLXD is a powerful digital DC drive controller designed to manage external 3-phase thyristor stacks for high-power DC motors. It inherits the complete feature set and digital control functionality of the core PL/X series and is housed in the same compact chassis size as the PL/X 5–50 models.

The controller provides gate drive pulses with a primary pulse current capability of up to 1.5A to drive user-supplied pulse transformers. The PLXD can control the following stack configurations:

  1. 6-Pulse 2-Quadrant Bridge (6 thyristors) or two parallel bridges (12 thyristors).

  2. 6-Pulse 4-Quadrant Regenerative Anti-Parallel Bridge (12 thyristors).

For system integration, it features terminals for an externally isolated armature current signal, field signal, high-voltage armature voltage feedback (monitoring up to ±1000V DC), and a heatsink thermal sensor switch. It also provides a short-circuit protected ±24V supply for the gate drive pulse transformers. The unit can operate with up to 690V AC on its 3-phase auxiliary supply inputs (EL1/2/3), allowing external stacks to run at higher voltages if required.

PLX50 DC Drive

The PLXD includes an integrated motor field bridge with independent single-phase AC supply inputs (EF2/3) for controlling fields up to 32 Amps (internal supply voltage up to 500V AC). All customer-side control connections are implemented using pluggable screw terminals.

An optional Pulse Transformer Unit (Product Code LA102800) is available for users who prefer a complete solution, providing all external interface components necessary to connect the PLXD with the thyristor stack and AC current transducers. This unit, designed for DIN-rail mounting, includes twelve pulse transformer networks for 2Q or 4Q bridges and two networks for an external field bridge.

PLA SPS Controller

The PLA is designed primarily for system integrators and panel builders, allowing you to enhance and simplify any analog or digital drive control system. It can reduce or eliminate the need for costly PLC
or PC-based systems. You can use the PLA for a range of industrial applications. Easy-to-use, configurable
software blocks provide you with a powerful and flexible method for processing analog and digital signals.
